Wolff: Preparations for the 2023 season are more important than ranking in the championship

If you are second, it means that you are only the first of the losers, Enzo Ferrari once said, and this season they are also aware of this at Mercedes, where they say that beating Ferrari for second place in this year's championship is not as important as to lay the groundwork for victories in the coming season.

The two Mercedes racing cars showed glimpses of their old winning form at the Hungarian Grand Prix, and for the second time in a row won a double podium finish. With the team's success, the German team came within 30 points of Ferrari in the constructors' standings and thus has a good chance to finish the season ahead of the Italian team. But this is not so important for the boss of the Mercedes team, Toto Wolff. "Second is the first loser," he said when asked about the possibility of winning second place. "Whether we are second or third is not as important as getting back to the front and developing a car that will be able to win. We'd rather be preparing for next season than worrying about where we are in the championship."

With his second place at the Hungaroring, Lewis Hamilton won his sixth podium this year, which is more than Ferrari's leading driver Charles Leclerc. "I would rather have more wins and fewer podiums," Wolff replied to the statistic. "We are humble, but we strive for victories, not second and third places." Nevertheless, the Austrian adds: "However, if they are the result of our speed, as this time in Hungary, then this is a good sign of progress."
