In qualifying for the Chinese Grand Prix, Mark Webber was stopped by a lack of fuel in the car. The Australian was given too little fuel by mechanics due to a fault in the refueling device, which forced him to park his car right next to the track in the middle of the second part of the qualifications.

There was no prescribed amount left in the race car to take the sample, so the commissioners excluded the Red Bull racer from the qualifications, causing the race to start from the background.

Before the start of the race, Red Bull announced that the Australian will start the race from the pits, after they changed the gearbox on his car.
