Vinales described the transfer to Yamaha as a mistake

Maverick Vinales admitted in a recent interview that his move to Yamaha in 2017 was not the right step in his career. The Spaniard left the Iwata team early last season and moved to Aprilia.

Dissatisfaction and poor energy within his part of the team were not hidden from the public. The Spaniard has repeatedly publicly criticized the lack of support from the team in the past. Even the victory at the start of the season in Qatar did not bring change for the better. The results in the subsequent races were again below average, he did not return to the podium until the end of June in the Netherlands.

It was the great fluctuations in form that marked his period at Yamaha the most. On a good day, he could be practically unstoppable, but when things didn't go his way, he was far from the best. The pot exploded at the Styrian Grand Prix, where he wanted to damage the powertrain during the race with aggressive behavior. After this event, he was first suspended by the team and then terminated prematurely. Vinales has already played for Aprilia in Aragon.

Despite everything that has happened, the Spaniard, as he admits, has no grudges against the Japanese team.

“I can’t say anything bad about them. I had a great motorcycle available. I still don't understand how we didn't have a glass. In some races I was invincible and in others I was last. ”

The epidemic changed his priorities

The desire for a new challenge is said to have originated from the beginning of the epidemic, when he got married and had a daughter.

“I have changed my priorities. When you have a family you change the way you look at the world. It’s nice to win, but you wanted something more. I want to feel the support of the team. So I also decided to switch to Aprilia. The Italian team is different from the Japanese. I have always had good relations with Japanese teams. I love their food and culture. But I wanted to feel this ardent support within the team, to just believe in you. ”

“The opportunity to help the team get to the top a bit from the background is a huge motivation. Of course, I want to be a champion, but to achieve something extraordinary, such as the breakthrough of Aprilia to the top, is even more special. ”

The Spaniard has reunited with Aleix Espargara in the Aprilia team, who is set to play an important role in his decision to transfer.

Leaving Suzuki was a mistake

I don’t want to talk about the past because I know I made a mistake when I left Suzuki. We created an exceptional team, but at the time, Yamaha’s motorcycle was winning. I made the decision, right or not. But that eventually brought me to where I am now happy. I regained my motivation and joy of racing. Quite the opposite as last year when I came to the racetrack on Friday in a bad mood and without energy. I can still offer a lot to sports. ”
