Sebastian Vettel described the start of Ferrari's racing career as positive after setting the best time on the first day of testing in the red car.

The four-time world champion set a time of 1: 22.620 on medium-hard tires 0.157 seconds faster than the second fastest Marcus Ericsson, who drove with soft tires.

“I think it was a good start. We can be satisfied with the number of laps, ”said Vettel, who drove 60 laps, which is inappropriately more than last year. “First impressions are very good but for the first day it is very good. Many things are different, such as the arrangement of the buttons on the steering wheel, as well as the steering wheel itself. After all, the buttons probably do the same thing as in a Red Bull race car, although they are different and take some time to get used to.

Of course, the car is also different. It is based on a different philosophy and made by other people, but fortunately I was able to use my free time in the winter to get acquainted with all this, so that I can now focus on the race car. ”

Vettel explained that there is still some room for improvement after his work today was curtailed by a telemetry problem, and in his opinion, Mercedes has shown that it will be a tough nut to crack this year as well.

“Mercedes is still a team we compare ourselves to. Lap times are not so important, the number of laps is important. Today, they drove around 150 laps, showing that they have a very reliable car, which we hope is not as fast as ours, but everyone hopes for that. Hopefully it won’t be as fast as last year, but they have to admit that they did an exceptional job.

I would be surprised if we were not as good as last year, ”added Vettel.
