With a lead of more than 0.6 seconds, Max Verstappen won the best starting position for the Canadian Grand Prix, which will be started by two-time world champion Fernando Alonso. Third was a Ferrari racer, Carlos Sainz.

The qualifiers started on a wet track, which was drying all the time, thus predicting a rather uncertain outcome, as the racers were constantly improving their lap times. The qualifiers were suspended with the red flag after Sergio Perez drove off the track and crashed into the protective tires, and Verstappen was constantly one step ahead of the rivals. For the Dutchman, this is the first pole position at the Gilles Villeneuve racetrack in Canada.

Fourth place was won by Lewis Hamilton, ahead of Haas duo Kevin Magnussen and Mick Schumacher, and another Alpine racer, Esteban Ocon. George Russell took a risk in the last attempt with dry track tires, but his lap ended in the second corner. The Briton will start the race from eighth place, while Daniel Ricciardo and Zhou Guanyu also finished in the top ten.

Charles Leclerc will start the race from penultimate place after using additional engine control electronics on Friday and receiving a penalty of losing 10 seats, then a new powertrain was installed in his race car, causing him to lose ten more seats. Monačan drove only one lap in the qualifiers, gaining one place according to the rules compared to Juki Tsunodo, who also lost his starting places due to a change of engine.
