Spaniard Luis Salom succumbed to injuries resulting from a fall in the second free practice of the Moto2 class in Barcelona. Salom fell at high speed in the 12th turn. After slipping off the track, he slid along the entire excursion zone with the motorcycle and stopped in the protective tires, hitting the motorcycle at high speed. The 24-year-old Salom is the first victim in the World Motorcycle Championship, following the tragic death of Marco Simoncelli in 2011, and the first in the Moto2 class after Shoho Tomizawa in Misano in 2010.

As a result of the accident, there were protests among MotoGP class racers regarding driving through a bend in which there is no sand in the excursion zones, which would stop the engine in the event of a fall. There are only paved excursion areas.

Following the meeting of the safety commission, the racers will drive for the rest of the race weekend according to the configuration of the track, which was in use for the Spanish GP in Formula One in 2007, ie through the chicane, instead of through the fast turn no. 12.

In this track layout, turn no. 10, where asphalted excursion zones are also located. The lap of the race will be shorter as a result. Instead of 4,727 kilometers, the circle will be 4,655 kilometers long.

To make it easier for racers to get used to the new configuration, Saturday morning’s free practice will be one hour long.
