Will the Mercedes engine be significantly more powerful?

German Auto Motor und Sport claims that Mercedes V6 units, which will be in use in Formula One next year, are expected to be up to 75 kW or around one hundred horsepower more powerful than all the others. The newspaper's correspondent, Tobias Gruner, claims that Mercedes secured the services of Lewis Hamilton with the promise that he will have a good chance to beat Red Bull ace Sebastian Vettl in the 2014 season.

“Mercedes seems to be one step ahead of everyone,” Gruner claims. “The paddock says the new silver engine has a hundred horsepower more than Renault or Ferrari. Of course, Mercedes does not want to confirm this, but the men in leading positions are showing signs of unusual self-confidence, ”he adds.

As an additional sign that Mercedes has a certain advantage, the German newspaper cites their desire for Pirelli's rear tires to be wider next season, which would better transfer engine power and torque to the track, while Renault and Ferrari are completely satisfied with narrower tire specification.

Whether this is just a case of German patriotism or not, we don't know, but the justification with the desire for wider rear tires is definitely based on shaky foundations, because Mercedes would probably sign for a wider rear right this year when they don't have (so much) more powerful powertrain. tires that would reduce their overheating problems.
