Although it was claimed not long ago that the tire mixes would be changed only if all teams so requested, and a few days ago that most teams and racers were not bothered by this year's tire mixes and would continue to race on them, Pirelli decided to offers teams from the Spanish GP onwards different mixes, more similar to last year.

A few weeks ago, Mercedes and Red Bull publicly expressed dissatisfaction with this year’s tire mixes. They claimed that they are the only ones to punish better race cars, as the tires do not withstand the forces acting on them when the car drives through the bend completely at the limit of its capacity, so they asked Pirelli to return last year's mixtures.

Pirelli replied that they would not change the mix unless all teams so requested. “Currently, changes to the mix are not supported by all teams,” explained Paul Hembery, Pirelli’s motorsport boss, after the Malaysian Grand Prix. “If we change something and two or three race cars suddenly stop competing and some others are faster, we will have big problems. Some teams want to turn the situation to their advantage, ”added Hembery.

An informal meeting between Pirelli Mercedes and Red Bull followed. “Mixtures will change,” Mercedes ’Toto Wolff said afterwards. "In all likelihood already in Bahrain, or right after that."

From Pirelli then came the news that most of the teams of the only tiremaker in F1 are urging him not to change the tire mix. “This year is no different than in previous years. We offered teams a challenge and some like it, others don’t. But everyone faces the same challenge. In the end, most of the teams expressed a desire not to change anything, ”Paul Hembery said this week. "We may have to do this, but most of us are determined not to change anything, despite the negative statements in the media."

Hembery added that the Red Bull team is the loudest in their desire for change, as other teams fear that any change would benefit the current world champions. “They were loudest at Red Bull. For others, if they see one team pulling in a certain direction, they start to resist that direction, because they think that there is a good reason why this team wants such changes, ”Hembery explained.

But after the race for the grand prize, Pirelli announced that changes would take place. From Spain onwards, teams are expected to be supplied with a more durable harder version of the tires, which is more similar to last year.

“After assessing the performance of the tires in the first four races, we decided, of course in consultation with the other teams, to change the hard mix from Spain onwards, as we did two years ago when we also offered a new hard tire in Barcelona. then it was in use for the rest of the season, ”Hembery explained. “This newer version of the hard tire is closer to last year. This will give teams more room to maneuver in choosing tactics in combination with other mixtures, which will remain unchanged. ”

At the same time, they confirmed from Pirelli that they will offer the racers in Monaco a super soft and soft mix, and in Canada a super soft and medium hard.
