Nigel Stepney, a former Ferrari engineer and one of the main actors in the Spygate affair, died in a car accident today.
Stepney, 56, began his Formula One career in 1970, but before joining Ferrari, he worked for Lotus and Benetton. He was fired from the Italian team in 2007 on suspicion of sabotaging racer Kimi Raikkonen and handing over confidential information to McLarn technical director Mike Coughlan.
After an infamous Formula One reputation in 2010, Stepney joined the JRM team in the GT1 and Wolrd Endurance series, most recently participating in the development of this year’s Nissan GT-R Nismo GT3.
“From the moment Nigel joined the team in 2010, he has been a key person on the team as he has brought us an invisible level of engineering experience,” said James Rumsey, owner of JRM. “The man who worked with Lotus with Ayrton Senna and who led Michael Schumacher to five world titles with Ferrari was an ideal candidate for our team,” he added of Stepney, adding that his contribution to the team’s success will not be never forgotten.
