The cost-cutting suggestions are ridiculous

The president of the FIA, Jean Todt, called the proposals to reduce costs in Formula One ridiculous by the teams. Representatives of the teams came together and proposed some solutions to reduce costs. Among the proposals are, among other things, the abolition of tire heaters and the introduction of even more standardized parts, which, according to Todt, will not be enough.

“I asked them to advise how to cut costs,” Todt said. “We know that teams have budgets ranging between 72 and 290 million euros, and the proposed solutions would reduce budgets by only two million, which is downright ridiculous.

We want to reduce costs by 30 to 40 percent, only then will we be satisfied. I have some ideas myself, but I would like to see what the teams think about them. We will meet again and I hope that they will have enough understanding and that they will also make good suggestions. But what they have proposed now is ridiculous. ”

Todt believes most of the money could be saved by reducing the number of employees on the teams. “There are too many employees in the teams. I recently watched a movie with Juan Manuel Fangio, Tazio Nuvoleri Jim Clark and Jack Brabham and there were ten people in each team at the time.

Times are changing, we have to accept this, but we need to find the right ratio between the number of employees. These cost the most.

Then there’s the number of race car parts they make with development. We are thinking about these things now when we talk about saving, ”Todt explained.
