Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo is confident Ayrton Senna would end his career with the Maranello team.

Today marks twenty years since the tragic death of Ayrton Senna at the San Marino Grand Prix in Imola. On this occasion, Montezemolo spoke about his admiration for the Brazilian, and his desire to transfer to Ferrari.

“I’ve always appreciated Ayrton’s racing style,” Montezemolo wrote on the Ferrari website. “Like all great champions, he also had an incredible desire to win. He always strived for perfection, he constantly wanted to improve. He was outstanding in qualifying and an even bigger fighter in races where he was relentless.

He wanted to transfer to Ferrari and I wanted him on this team. When he came to Italy before the race in Imola, we met at my home on April 27th. He told me that he appreciated our rebellion against the increasing use of electronic gadgets, which made the racers ’abilities not at the forefront. We talked for a long time and he told me quite clearly that he wanted to end his career at Ferrari after he was very close to joining us a few years ago.

We agreed to meet again soon to examine how to circumvent the contractual obligations that bound him at the time. We agreed that the Ferrari team would be an ideal environment for the continuation of his career, which was exceptional and unique even by today's standards.

Unfortunately, one of the most tragic weekends in the history of Formula One took away Ayrton and Roland Ratzenberger. ”
