The Ferrari driver continued the race, which was interrupted two laps before the end, from fourth place, and at the start of the lap he hit Fernando Alonso's car and spun the Spaniard. The race was interrupted once again due to numerous accidents, and Sainz's five-second penalty pushed him to the bottom of the standings, in twelfth place.

"I'd rather not talk about it," said the disappointed Spaniard, who also received two penalty points, immediately after the race. "I'm too disappointed and I'll probably say something nasty. This is the most unfair punishment I have ever seen in my life. I will go to the commissioners and talk to them. It's the biggest disgrace I've seen in this sport in the last few years."
