The Toro Rosso team has confirmed that Carlos Sainz Jr. will be racing for them next season alongside Max Verstappn. Sainz became the first racer from the Red Bull Young Racers program to become the champion of the Formula Renault 3.5 series.
“I’m glad I got the chance to race for Toro Rosso,” said the Spaniard, the son of two-time world rally champion Carlos Sainz. “This has been my goal ever since I joined the Young Racers program and I would like to thank Red Bull for the trust. It’s been a very successful season for me, so I’m looking forward to advancing to Formula One.
Last year I already drove a Toro Rossa race car in tests. I really liked the atmosphere in the team. In the coming months, I will work hard to prepare for the first test of the season in Jerez, ”he added.
Team boss Franz Tost said Sainz convinced the leading men with development in the lower categories. “I followed Carlos in the lower categories. He was getting better and better, and he peaked this year. I also remember that day of testing in Silverstone in 2013. He really surprised me and the engineers with his adult approach and speed, ”he said.
Sainz tested for both the Toro Rosso and Red Bull teams at Silverston last year, and did another test earlier this week when he drove a Red Bull RB10 race car in Abu Dhabi.
