George Russell finished the qualifying sprint race in Silverstone in ninth place, but will start the race for the UK Grand Prix three places lower as he was punished by commissioners for colliding with Carlos Sainz.
Esteban Ocon, Sainz, who will start the race in tenth place, and Pierre Gasly will advance to the Briton, while Russell also received a penalty point, which means that he now has seven in 12 months.
Russell and Sainz got entangled in a Brooklands bend where a Williams racer made a mistake and collided with the Spaniard with a blocked wheel on the brakes. The Ferrari racer drove off the track and lost a few places, but after the qualifying race he said: “It was an obvious mistake on George's part. Such mistakes happen quickly, but I lost a lot in this incident, as I fell from tenth place to last. ”
Russell, however, disagreed with the Ferrari racer. “Carlos tried to overtake from a great distance, so in a way he cut me off. I could see what was going on, but I couldn’t prevent the collision. I tried to turn, but as you could see, I was braking and the bike was blocking, so I couldn't prevent the collision. "
The commissioners treated the incident as a qualifying event due to the new format, as he would get a time penalty for such a collision in a normal race.
