The Italian started the race in fifth place. He lost a few more places after an unfortunate start, but then quickly made his way to the forefront and then, when Jorge Lorenzo completely relented, took the lead.

Rossi now has 103 points in the championship standings and is currently in third place. He is 22 points behind the leading Marquez, and ten less behind his teammate Lorenzo, who registered a zero after the collision with Andrea Iannone.
