Bernie Ecclestone has labeled Kimi Raikkonen as the star of the 2013 season after winning the opening race in Melbourne.

While the main man of Formula One yesterday expressed dissatisfaction with Alonso’s performances this season and admitted he was disappointed by the Spaniard, the same cannot be said for the Finn, who finished fifth overall, despite missing out on the last two races.

"I can admit that Kimi is the star of the 2013 season, depending on the situation he was in," said the 82-year-old Briton.

"I think he was motivated by the hope that he would get the debt paid off by Lotus."

Raikkonen, who is one of the most popular Formula One icons, with his cold-blooded but at the same time charismatic character, is, according to Eccelston, a good choice in the sport.

"Kimi is a good choice for the team and at the same time for us as the organizers of Formula One"
