Quartararo: Sprint races are dangerous

Fabio Quartararo is not enthusiastic about sprint races, as he believes that only these are dangerous. He is afraid that serious accidents could happen.

The premier sprinter race in Portimao was won by current world champion Francesco Bagnaia after overtaking Jorge Martin in the last lap.

Quartararo finished the race in tenth place and thus remained without points. After a bad start, he was involved in an accident after Joan Mir crashed into him in the thirteenth turn. The Spaniard fell, but the French rider managed to stay on the bike, but lost valuable time and slipped completely to the start.

Already in the next lap, we saw another accident after Luca Marini took Eneo Bastianini with him into the sand when he fell. The Ducati rider suffered a fractured right scapula, thus ending the racing weekend.

After the race, the world champion of the 2021 season expressed his dissatisfaction with the new format, as the racers are supposed to be much more aggressive in their desire for a good result, which leads to dangerous situations.

"I really don't like this format," said the Frenchman after the race.

"A serious accident will happen soon. It's like in the jungle. We don't sit in racing cars where you can bump into a competitor, but it won't be dangerous."

"We only saw three crashes today, but there are 20 more races like this ahead of us and I'm afraid there will be many more crashes."

It would be better to have two races of 25 laps

He himself believes that it would be better to have two races of 25 laps in one weekend than a sprint race.

"I am not surprised by the aggressiveness of the racers, as we only have 12 laps. Better to have two races of 25 laps each. Physically, it's more tiring, but the racers would have more time and there wouldn't be such aggressiveness."

"If you lose a few positions in a sprint race, you are in big trouble. I myself was last after the collision, and when you know you don't have many laps available to correct your position, you become much more aggressive in your driving, which is dangerous."

He is angry that the comments and suggestions of racers regarding increasing safety are not taken into account.

"The words and suggestions of racers to improve safety are not taken into account. Changes only happen when it is too late.”

At the end, he commented on his performance in the race.

"I made a good start from the starting position, but when I shifted into second gear I lost a lot of places. Then he collided with Miro and was completely last. Riding behind Zarco and Alex Marquez, I was able to see our strengths and weaknesses. The rhythm itself was not bad, but we need to improve our qualifications so that we start the races more in the front."
