Brazilian Nelson Piquet Jr. won the championship in the opening season of Formula E with the Chinese team Nextev. He earned the title after collecting only one point more than Sebastian Buemi, as he finished only seventh in the last race in London.

Buemi narrowed the gap to five points with a win in Saturday’s race and in case he managed to get past Bruno Senna in the final lap on Sunday, he would become champion. The fastest in the race was Stephane Sarrazin, who started from the best starting position but lost quite a few places due to a forty-second second penalty, so the winner became Sam Bird with Virgin.

Piquet Jr. he jokingly said he would lend Senni a credit card for a year to keep Buemi. He praised his team with the words: “The championship was very close. We got a good group of guys. They trusted me and believed in me. ”
