A rookie in the royal motorcycling class, Marc Marquez won the best starting position for the race with a record lap time in Valencia, which will decide this year’s championship title. The Spaniard overtook Jorge Lorenzo and Dani Pedroso with a time of 1: 30.237.

Lorenzo was the first to break the lap record set by Pedrosa in 1 with 30.844: 2012, but after the first attempt he had to go to the garage due to problems with the powertrain of his motorcycle. In the end, he was 0.34 seconds behind Marquez with a spare engine, and Pedrosa a tenth more.

The first starting line was filled by Valentino Rossi, who was 0.7 seconds behind the best time. The Italian promises to interfere in the duel of Lorenzo and Marquez in the race, who only need to be in the top four to win this year's laurels in the event of Lorenzo's victory.
