Mercedes chief engineer Andrew Shovlin believes Red Bull knew their racer Max Verstappen was doing the wrong thing and causing a collision with Lewis Hamilton.
This is clear from the fact that this time Christian Horner and Helmut Marko did not criticize Hamilton, as was the case after the race in Silverstone, where Verstappen and Hamilton also collided.
The commissioners blamed the UK on Hamilton, who was penalized with a ten-second mark-up towards the final time, but still won the race and scored 25 points, while Verstappen resigned and was left without. For the collision at Monza, where they both resigned with Hamilton, the commissioners blamed the Dutchman and punished him with losing three starting places in the next race in Russia.
“We were convinced that Lewis had done nothing wrong and that Max was to blame for the collision,” Shovlin said. "Hlemut and Christian didn't blame Lewis this time, so it seems like they both knew Max was doing the wrong thing, as they take every opportunity to blame Lewis. The incident cost Lewis a win, but definitely a second place, so the penalty of losing three places is relatively easy to make up if you have a competitive car. ”
Shovlin is confident that Hamilton would have overtaken Land Norris, who otherwise finished the race in second place, behind the winner Daniel Ricciard by the end of the race, had it not been for the collision with Verstappn. “If it hadn’t been for the collision with Max, Lewis would only be racing against Daniel. Lando had the help of a race car wind in front of him in a sprint race, so in that case Leis would only race against Daniel and we all know Lewis goes into a special area when he sees victory is achievable. It would be a good battle at the end of the race, but I would have to overtake Ricciard on the track to win, ”adds Shovlin.
