Max Verstappen took the best starting position in F1 qualifying for the Australian Grand Prix, his 21st career. Mercedes driver George Russell will start the race from the front row. Lewis Hamilton, who was defeated by his teammate for the third time in qualifying, was third ahead of Fernando Alonso and Carlos Sainz. Lance Stroll was sixth, Charles Leclerc seventh, followed by Alex Albon, Pierre Gasly, and Nico Hulkenberg tenth.

Q1 suspended due to Perez fault

Qualifying started on a dry track, and Q1 was already red-flagged with 11 minutes to go when Sergio Perez made a braking error and slid into the sandy excursion zone, where he got stuck before setting the time. As it seems for now, the Mexican will start the race from last place.

In the end, in addition to Perez, local Oscar Piastri, Guanyu Zhou, Logan Sargeant, and Valtteri Bottas were eliminated, and Max Verstappen set the fastest time ahead of George Russell, Lewis Hamilton, Esteban Ocon, and Fernando Alonso.

Esteban Ocon, Juki Tsunoda, Lando Norris, Kevin Magnussen and Nyck de Vries dropped out at the end of the second half.
