Maverick Vinales will not be competing in the MotoGP race for the Grand Prix of the Americas this weekend after his 15-year-old cousin Dean Berta Vinales was fatally injured in the SSP300 race in Jerez last Sunday.
Dean, who was racing for Maverick’s father’s team, crashed unhappily while being run over by one of his rivals.
Maverick arrived in Jerez on Sunday morning, where he paid his respects to his dead cousin along with the rest of the paddock, and Aprilia reported that not enough time had passed since the tragedy, so the Spaniard would take a break.
