With a track record in Portimao (1.37.226), Marc Marquez won the best starting position before the premier sprint race in the MotoGP class. Next to him, Francesco Bagnaia and Jorge Martin will start from the front row. The reigning world champion led all the way to the finish when Marc Marquez overtook him with the help of a wind from Eneja Bastaianini.

Home ace Miguel Oliveira will occupy the fourth starting position ahead of Jack Miller, who crashed at the end of qualifying. The third turn was fatal for the Australian. The sixth time was set by Enea Bastaianini ahead of Maverick Vinales and the Mooney VR46 Racing team. Marco Bezzecchi was faster than Luca Marini this time. French racers Johann Zarco and Fabio Quartararo took tenth and eleventh place.

The world champion from the 2021 season has a lot of work to do in the sprint race this afternoon if he wants to join the fight for the top spots.

The worst among the fastest is Aleix Espargaro in twelfth place. Apart from Miller, the Spaniard was the only one to crash in today's qualifying after losing control of his bike at turn thirteen.

Alex Marquez will start the race from thirteenth place ahead of Joan Miro and Brad Binder.
