Alex Marquez won the MotoGP sprint race in Malaysia by more than a second, where he attacked and overtook then-leader Francesco Bagnaio after about halfway through the race. The Italian, who ended up third, remained in the lead of the world championship after the race, but Jorge Martin managed to close the gap with second place. There is an 11-point gap between Bagnaia and Martin before Sunday's race.
Bagnaia's team rival Enea Bastianini was fourth in the end, seemingly faster than Bagnaia but didn't decide to try to overtake, and fifth was Brad Binder, who tried to find a way past Bastianini in the last lap.
