Current world champion Marc Marquez started the defense of his title as best he could, as he won the best starting position in the qualifiers for the race in Qatar. The Spaniard beat Alvaro Bautista and Bradley Smith by a hair.
Jorge Lorenzo will start the race in fifth place, with Marquez teammate Dani Pedrosa one place behind him. Valentino Rossi was only tenth with a good half a second behind.
