Jorge Lorenzo suffered the worst blow in the fight for this year's title to rival Marco Marquez. With his 50th career victory, he came dangerously close to the Spaniard in Philip Island, Australia, with the maximum points, but he was disqualified from the race because he did not make the obligatory replacement of the motorcycle within a certain framework.

Before the race, the race management announced that the race would last only 19 and not 27 laps due to safety, as the wear of the tires in training due to the new asphalt surface was much higher than expected. In addition, all racers in the ninth or tenth lap had to change motorcycles, while the whole race had to be ridden on harder tires.

The start went without a hitch, and Marquez tried to pass Lorenzo in a chic Honda, but the Yamaha racer took the lead again when entering the Siberia corner.

When it came time for a mandatory stop in the pits, Dani Pedrosa was the first to make it at the end of the ninth lap. Lorenzo did his job at the end of the tenth, and Marquez made a mistake and continued down the track, replacing the engine only in the eleventh lap. On his way back to the track, Lorenzo narrowly escaped new contact with his compatriot. Racer Repsol Honda was disqualified for stopping outside the agreed framework, making the fight for this year’s championship a real thriller.

Marquez’s lead has shrunk from 43 points to just 18, and there are two more races to go by the end of the season.
