With the victory in Montegi, Japan, Jorge Lorenzo managed to postpone the decision on this year's champion to the last race of the season. It will also be the first time since 2006 that the title will be decided by the last race.

Lorenzo led all the way from start to finish, although Marc Marquez tried several times to pass. The Yamaha racer has won for the sixth time this year, and Marquez’s lead is now 13 points. Marquez's teammate Dani Pedrosa finished the race in third place, but he also lost his theoretical chances for this year's laurels.

Marquez, who was left without points in the previous race in Australia due to disqualification, fell badly in the morning warm-up and needed some medical help due to neck and back pain.

Although Lorenzo counted a bit on the help of his teammate Valentino Rossi, who was driving in second place after the start, the Italian let him down in the second lap when he made a mistake and let both Honda racers down. The nine-time champion made the same mistake in the next lap, but he drove into the sand by the track and returned to the track only in eleventh place.
