Lewis Hamilton did not say he was pleasantly surprised to see him finish qualifying at the Hungaroring ahead of Sebastian Vettl. The Mercedes racer was only sixth fastest in the morning's third free practice, but he overtook Vettl by 0.038 seconds in the last part of the qualifiers.

With his thirtieth best starting position in his career, he is now one better than Juan Manuel Fangio, and the starting position is expected to give him a 25 percent chance of winning.

“I was really surprised when I drove across the line. I expected the pole to conquer Seb. I thought he made a mistake or something like that because I didn’t even feel like my Tao circle would be very good, ”Hamilton explained. “It’s a long way to the first turn, but if I drive it first and keep that place, it will bring me some advantages. The Red Bull and Lotus race cars will be insanely fast tomorrow, so keeping them behind will be a big challenge. ”
