Lewis Hamilton revealed at a short press conference in Melbourne, where this weekend's Australian Grand Prix is taking place, that he is finally saying goodbye to his role as a Mercedes driver.

In the last two seasons, the Briton became increasingly dissatisfied with the situation in the Mercedes team, which did not prepare a competitive racing car for him, and this year he also showed his dissatisfaction in public when he said that the engineers did not take his wishes into account when designing this year's racing car. Hamilton's contract with Mercedes expires at the end of this season, and negotiations for an extension have not borne fruit.

The seven-time world champion will still be present in Formula 1 for some time, as he will be responsible for running F2024 races as a director from the 1 season onwards. The Briton has been quietly discussing this with the president of the FIA, Mohammed Ben Sulay, for the past few weeks, and he was encouraged to take on this task by the former race director, Michael Masi, who was in a hurry in the F1 paddock on Friday.
