Fabio Leimer will be behind the wheel of a Formula 1 car for the first time this weekend in Hungary, as he was hired by Marussia for his first free practice.

The 2-year-old, GP2013 Series champion in the XNUMX season, has joined the team as an official reserve racer ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix, and will take the place of Robert Merhi on Friday morning.

“We offered Leimer the opportunity we had planned, as we have been working together for some time. We were happy to welcome him among us in the last few races. It will be interesting to get feedback from his race car and evaluate his performance, ”explained John Booth, head of the Marussia team.

Leimer added: “In this most difficult weekend for the team, I am very grateful to them for continuing with the planned performance in the first free practice. I look forward to the opportunity and hope to make a positive contribution to the ego engineering program over the weekend. ”

At Marussia, they described the decision as a planned step for Leimer to join the team, which will help him be ready.

In addition to this racer, we will also see last year's GP2 series champion, Jolyon Palmer, on the track, who will once again drive a Lotus.
