Valentino Rossi, who joined Yamaha in 2004 and helped turn around the form of the Japanese manufacturer and win two consecutive championships, became the brand's official ambassador in Jerez.

The Italian won two more championships in 2008 and 2009, and in total he won seven championships with Yamaha in the elite class of the motorcycle championship. Rossi ended his MotoGP racing career with Yamaha at the end of the 2021 season.

The Italian started two campaigns with Yamaha, the first from 2004 to 2009 and the second from 2013 until the end of 2021, after spending two poor seasons with Ducati in between, in 2011 and 2012. Of his 89 MotoGP victories, Rossi won 56 with Yamaha and is the most successful racer of the Japanese manufacturer in history.

Valentino Rossi is still the most successful Yamaha rider in MotoGP

After retiring in 2021, Rossi ventured into the waters of motor racing in GT World Challenge Europe with the WRT team, while also owning the VR46 team that competes in the MotoGP class. Rossi linked up with Ducati for his team's debut season in 2022, but a move to Yamaha has now been mooted as the latter look to once again have a satellite team following RNF Racing's move to Aprilia for the 2023 season.

Cooperation between Yamaha and VR46 exists in the current season in the MotoGP paddock in the form of the Yamaha VR46 Master Camp team in the Moto2 class.

Rossi's Team Mooney VR46 currently leads the MotoGP championship with rider Marco Bezzecchi holding a three-point lead ahead of Sunday's Spanish race at Jerez. Rossi will now also be there as a Yamaha brand ambassador.
