Aleks Humar and Florjan Rus, the national champions of Slovenia in the rally, performed excellently at the rally of the absolute Italian national championship near Udine, Italy. After a great performance on the hot Italian asphalt, they won second place among two-wheeled race cars during countless turns.
The Alpi Orientali Rally is one of the greatest classics of Italian rally sport, which also attracted all the favorites and the best racers of the absolute Italian national championship last weekend. Aleks Humar and Florjan Rus also presented themselves in a strong competition, which was dictated by the former Italian and European champion Luca Rossetti with the same Renault Clio R3T. The Slovenians impressed with their attacking drive on Friday afternoon, overtook the favored Rossetti by six seconds in one of the tests and pointed out their undisputed quality. The battle for victory between the two-wheel-drive race cars flared up on Saturday as racers tamed almost countless corners at temperatures around 35 degrees Celsius. On further testing, Humar was disturbed by a warning about a drop in engine oil pressure, he also knew the road worse than Rossetti and therefore, as expected, he had to concede victory. Humar nevertheless finished the rally in an excellent second place among direct rivals. The Slovenian champion was seventh in the overall standings and third in the Mitropa Cup.
“The rally was very demanding as expected, the same goes for the competition. This is why we finally went to the rally, as these winding roads offer a lot of pleasure. The first day I had problems with the brakes, the second day with the oil pressure in the engine. On those trials, which I already knew a little better from previous years, Florjan and I were also close to Rossetti. On the new fast sections for me, however, it was harder to follow him. Regardless of everything, we were also second in the Renault Clio R3T Cup and we wanted to defend this place at the end of the rally, ”said Humar after the rally.
The Slovenian national champions will next take part on September 11 and 12 at the rally of the national championship in Nova Gorica, which will also count for the Mitropa Cup.
