How the post-epidemic crisis will affect the MotoGP class

Due to the large impact that the Coronavirus epidemic will have on the financial side of the motorcycle class, shortening the racing weekend to three days is mentioned as one possible solution.

Currently, in the world of motorcycling, in addition to speculation about the resumption of competition, there are more and more questions about the future of it. It is clear that this pandemic will have a significant economic impact on the competition itself. This concerns both the teams themselves as well as the sponsors who invest in the championship. Not long ago, Ducati sports director Paolo Cibatti said in an interview that everyone involved in the competition will have to think carefully about how to proceed, as much less money will be available. This will mainly affect the development of motorcycles. In the 2021 season, racers could (at least in terms of engine and aerodynamics) compete with this year's motorcycles.

Another proposal to cut costs is to shorten the racing weekend by one day. This currently takes place over four days, from Thursday, which is reserved for media and promotional activities, to Sunday. With the "removal" of Thursday, all media obligations would be fulfilled on Friday morning, which would also remove one of the four (three for lower classes) free trainings. The Saturday and Sunday program would be the same as in the past. That way, you would save on two things. The first is one sleepless night in a hotel less (on weekends), which multiplied by 20 taking into account all team members already represents a nice share.

The other is less mileage on the track. Fewer miles with the same number of races means teams will use fewer powertrains and other parts. All this taking into account that there would be slightly fewer falls. Racers, on the other hand, would take less time to fix problems and prepare for the race. None of these solutions, however, would affect ticket sales. The Saturday and Sunday events that are most visited would still be unchanged. Even more, television broadcasters would complain about these changes.
