According to Ferrari boss Maurizio Arrivabene, Esteban Gutierrez was too young to make his Formula One debut in 2012 and paid the price for advancing to the top car class at the end of this season, when the Swiss team cut ties after three seasons of racing with Sauber.
The Mexican became Ferrari's test and backup racer last week, and brought his sponsor, telecommunications giant America Movil, to Maranello, which includes the Telmex, Telcel and Claro brands, whose logos will be visible on Ferrari's Kimi Raikkoten and Sebastian.
Arrivabene warned that Gutierrez should not be underestimated. “Esteban is one of the racers who got into Formula One too soon. Talented racers should not step on the scene too quickly. I am sure that Esteban is talented and that he will get the opportunity to show it, ”said Arrivabene.
Sauber was left without points with Ferrari engines this season, marking the Swiss team’s worst season in Formula One racing history.
Gutierrez and Adriana Sutila will be replaced in the Sauber race cars next season by Marcus Ericsson and newcomer Felipe Nasr, who brought a lot of sponsorship money with them to the financially impoverished team.
