Giovinazzi does not want comparisons with Leclerc

In his first full season in Formula 1, Antonio Giovinazzi does not want to be burdened by the achievements of Charles Leclerc from last season, when he impressed everyone with his very good performances in his first season in Formula 1 and thus earned a place at Ferrari next season. He believes that many will evaluate and compare him with the young Monaco, whose place he took at Sauber.

Giovinazzi has already competed in two Formula 1 races, after replacing the then injured Pascal Wehrlein in the Swiss team at the beginning of the 2017 season. From then on, he played the role of test and development racer for both Sauber and Ferrari.

The 2 GP2016 world runner-up will be accompanied by a challenging rival, 2007 world champion Kimi Raikkonen. He doesn’t want comparisons to his teammate in the upcoming season.

“I haven’t talked to Leclerc much about his transfer to Ferrari, I want to focus mainly on myself,” Giovinazzi said. "I don't want to repeat or improve his results - my main goal is to achieve the best possible results I am capable of."

“I will also have another teammate than Charles. Everything will be different. I hope the car will be competitive from the first race in Melbourne. ”

Sauber started last season in the background with Williams, which meant that Leclerc was eliminated in the first races in the first part of qualifying. The team's progress in the rest of the season allowed him to present his luxurious talent even easier and better, which in the end also brought him a transfer to Ferrari.

Giovinazzi denied the fact that Leclerc's success at Ferrari would also help his career, as it would prove that the best team can benefit greatly if they bet on a very young, not yet experienced racer.

"A lot of young racers are already proving that they are good enough for the best teams, such as Max Verstappen and, from next season, Pierre Gasly and Charles Leclerc."

“It is good to see a young racer who achieves excellent results in the best team. My current goal is to progress, because for me it will be the first season in Formula 1. We will see how things go. ”
