The rules of the 2017 season will require further discussions, as the technical bosses in Formula 1 did not come to a conclusion at Friday’s meeting.
In Heathrow, 11 technical representatives of Formula 1 teams and FIA technical director Charlie Whiting met. Many areas were reviewed, but even before the meetings, one of the participants said that “things will be a bit confusing before they get better”. Another source said they had made some progress, but "there are still some unresolved issues". They talked about the planned increase in vacuum and the protection of the cockpit with the so-called "halo design". They also touched on the plans for the 2018 season, when engine manufacturers are expected to supply only 12 million euros, which is a big reduction compared to the current 20-25 million euros. In addition, from this year, each car will be able to use a maximum of three gearboxes per season. Potential weight savings, however, may require an increase in tire and wheel width.
To make up for the remaining shortcomings of the rules, they will have the next opportunity in February, probably shortly before the Strategic Group and F1 Commission rally to be held in Geneva on 23 February. The men will have one last chance to agree on the rules, which must be drawn up by March 1, when the deadline expires. Any changes after this date can only be made by unanimous decision.
