Although Tim Gajser won his fifth world championship title this year in the Motocross World Championship, the fourth in the most difficult class, Makolčan failed in the selection for Slovenian athlete in 2022 and ranked a modest sixth place according to the scoring of sports journalists.

According to the committee of the Association of Sports Journalists of Slovenia, the title of Athlete of the Year 2022 went to Kristjan Čeh, who collected as many as 174 points. In the explanation of the selection, they stated that the Czech was awarded the title because "it would be difficult for him to dominate even more in the discus throw" because he "appeared in 21 matches and recorded 19 victories, when he did not win, he was once second and once third." second was Tadej Pogačar with 141 points, third was Žan Kranjec with 119 points, NBA star Luka Dončič was awarded almost half as many points by the commission as Čech (93), and motocross player Tim Gajser received only 60 points in fifth place.

Tim Gajser stood by the side of F1 world champion Max Verstappen and MotoGP star Marc Marquez at the meeting of Honda racers, but local sports journalists turned their backs on him during the vote for Sportsman of the Year.

Gajser was not overly angry about the "defeat", but wrote on his Facebook profile after the award that it would be better to stay at home: "Dear fans, don't get angry, the main thing for me is that you support me. You are right that it would be better to stay at home today."
