Pietro Fittipaldi, the grandson of two-time world champion Emerson, will be sitting in a Formula 1 car for the first time at a test in Abu Dhabi at the end of this season after it became clear that he will be a test driver for the Haas team next season. Fittipaldi has been in talks with the team for testing already this season, but all of this has been somewhat shifted due to an accident while preparing for the Car Endurance Championship race in Spa, where he broke his leg.

The 2017-year-old Brazilian is now also officially confirmed as a test driver for the Haas team for next season and will thus start performing his duties at Pirelli's tire test in Abu Dhabi after Sunday's race. Fittipaldi won the Formula V8 3.5 title in XNUMX, and this year is expected to have offers to compete in a number of other racing categories - WEC, IndyCar and Super Formula.

He has already competed six times in the IndyCar race, but did not compete in the endurance car championship after breaking his leg.

At the signing of the contract with Haas, he said:

“I am very grateful to the team for making this role possible for me. Gene Haas and Gunther Steiner contributed the most to this, and I especially thank them for the opportunity. They have done an outstanding job in Formula One this year, and the invitation to continue this success story with them is a great incentive for me. ”

“I am really looking forward to sitting in the race car in Abu Dhabi. I want to use the experience I will gain next season and in the future to get a seat in Formula 1. ”

On the second day of the Pirelli test, Fittipaldi will leave the car to former Formula V8 3.5 competitor Louis Deletraz.

“I am happy to welcome Pietre to our team. We are very much looking forward to working with him, ”said team leader Gunther Steiner.

“It brings with it a winning mindset from the lower categories, and has recently proven itself in the IndyCar series as well. We are happy to be able to give him the first test of a Formula 1 car. His role and feedback will help the team grow and develop in Formula 1. ”
