FIA over illegal race cars with laser system

Before the start of the season, the FIA introduced the latest technology to check the legality of racing cars. The new aerodynamic rules have brought an abundance of different interpretations and forms of racing cars, and teams are also quickly looking for holes in the rules or gray areas when something is not explicitly forbidden or allowed.

From this year on, the FIA will test race cars with a state-of-the-art, fully electronic, laser scanning and measuring system. "We check the races with a computer to see if they comply with all the geometric guidelines," explained Nikolas Tombazis, technical director of single-seater racing cars at the FIA. “Then we physically check the car and compare it with a computer model by scanning it with this modern system. This allows us to inspect an individual part by manually scanning the surface, or we check certain points on the race car, which we then check on the CAD model, ”he explained.

The laser measuring system consists of a stationary and a portable part, with which the judges measure the surface of the car.

Tombazis predicts that the race cars will undergo two types of inspections. For one, they will check basic parameters such as the width and height of the car and the distance of the car from the ground, and for the other they will perform a more detailed inspection, which will include a 3D image of the entire surface of the car.

“We hope to carry out quick checks on all racing cars, but we are still learning to work with the new system, especially in the conditions during the racing weekend.

We will conduct detailed inspections more randomly, a few race cars per race, with teams not knowing when they will be inspected. Of course, if there is a complaint against the car, or if we have serious concerns about compliance with the rules, we will review this car. The system is working very well so far. We still have a lot to learn, but it is a step in the right direction, ”added Tombazis
