The FIA changed the rules ahead of the weekend's resumption in Abu Dhabi, banning overtaking on the exit from the garages after Max Verstappen raced onto the track in a heavily curtailed second practice session to overtake George Russell and Lewis Hamilton.

The Dutchman said that the two rivals were too slow and that they wanted to block his way. "They drove slowly, but I wanted to get to the track as soon as possible, as we had limited time on the track," he explained. "When I tried to overtake them, they tried to push me into the wall."

Race director Niels Wittich issued new instructions to the teams and racers before the third training session and qualifications, in which he supplemented article 33.4 of the sports regulations, which otherwise prohibits "unnecessary slow driving and stopping at exits from garages,” and added that “overtaking on the exit is prohibited, except in the event that the racing car slows down due to obvious technical problems.”
