Two-time Formula 1 world champion Fernando Alonso will leave the Alpine team at the end of the season and move to Aston Martin, where he will take over the seat vacated by Sebastian Vettel.
The Spaniard is expected to sign a multi-year contract with Lorenzo Stroll's team, and his departure has now opened the door wide for Oscar Piastri.
"The Aston Martin team invests energy and is committed to winning, which is why it is one of the most exciting teams in Formula 1," said Alonso. "I have known Lawrence and Lanc for several years and it is very obvious that they have a passion and desire to succeed in Formula 1. I have watched the team systematically attract capable people with a winning past and I have become aware of the commitment at the Silverstone factory.
No team in Formula 1 at the moment shows a greater vision and absolute commitment to winning, so this is an exciting opportunity for me. I still have the appetite and the desire to fight at the front and I want to be part of an organization that is dedicated to learning, developing and succeeding," added the 41-year-old Alonso, who added: "I intend to win again in this sport, so I chose the opportunities , which I feel are right.”
