The seventh speed test of the Dakar Endurance Rally served with an unpopular event. 82 kilometers from the start of the ordeal, Frenchman Lionel Baud ran over a 63-year-old spectator to death, who, according to eyewitnesses, died at the scene.

Organizers confirmed that a spectator was standing on the part of the marked track, and rescuers were unable to help the victim. Baud, 48, held 52nd place in the overall standings at the time of the crash with the Mitsubishi Lancer.

It was also the first fatality of this year’s rally, and it is also the first fatality among spectators since 2013. At the time, an escort vehicle in Peru collided with two taxi drivers, killing two spectators.
