Daniel Ricciardo set the fastest time of the first free practice in Bahrain. Valtteri Bottas managed to get closer to him. Given that qualifying and the race will take place at night, the racers did a small number of laps at the start of the training. Due to engine problems, Max Verstappen spent practically the entire training in the garage, completed only two laps, and did not set a time. The best racer outside the top three teams was Haas Roman Grosjean this time. Good training is also behind Toro Ross racer Pierre Gasly, who set the seventh time.
