Commissioners disqualified Ricciard

Red Bull racer Daniel Ricciardo was left empty-handed after the first race of the season, even though he finished his home race in a great second place. As we reported on our Facebook page, the commissioners disqualified the Australian as his car exceeded the strictly defined fuel flow to the engine.

The FIA explained that his car was "constantly" consuming more fuel than allowed by the new rules. Commissioners measure consumption via a fuel flow meter and the Red Bull RB10 exceeded the planned 100 kilograms of fuel per hour.

The Milton Keynes team has announced a complaint, as the fuel flow meter supplied to the teams by the FIA is said to be inconsistent. “The fuel flow meter worked inconsistently on all race cars throughout the weekend. We at the team and at Renault are firmly convinced that no more fuel was brought into the engine than the rules allow, ”Red Bull said in a press release.

Red Bull boss Christian Horner claimed that according to his calculations and engine data, they did not break the rules.

“The fuel flow sensors supplied to us by the FIA have been causing problems for teams all over the paddock since its introduction in testing. There were discrepancies in their data recording and they proved to be unreliable. For example, some racers drove without them in the race, or failed during the race. We think that the sensor on our car was defective, because based on the data provided by the fuel injectors on the engine, which are calibrated and standard in all cars, we saw that there were no deviations, ”said Horner, who revealed that the FIA had informed the team that their car, according to the commissioners, was consuming too much fuel. But at Red Bull, they didn’t change the settings, as they felt the commissioners were upset because of the faulty sensor.

“We have been informed to reduce fuel flow, and we have expressed doubts about the integrity of the sensor. We thought our measurements were correct and we did not reduce the flow, as in this case the engine would be deprived of a large proportion of the power at the moment when everything was operating according to the rules.

As a result of Ricciard's penalty, newcomer Kevin Magnussen advanced to second place, but his teammate Jenson Button came to the podium from an ungrateful fourth place. The disqualification of the Red Bull racer helped Sergio Perez to tenth place, giving the Force India team points with both race cars.
