French Grand Prix MotoGP winner Marco Bezzecchi said he expected a penalty for aggressively overtaking Marco Marquez, who he pushed off the track before charging into the lead to win.

The VR46 rider started the race from the third starting row and made his way a few places ahead at the start, then after the fall of Maverick Vinales and Francesco Bagnaia he found the speed with which he passed Marquez and Jorge Martin to the lead.

But even before that, he had to give up one place for his aggressive maneuver, which he expected. "I completely agree with the punishment and I expected it. I wasn't planning on overtaking, but I made a braking mistake and braked about three meters too late. Seeing that I wasn't going to be able to slow down enough, I drove to the inside of the corner to avoid hitting Marc in the back. I pushed him off the ideal line and drove over the edge of the track together with him, so I expected the penalty."

Bezzecchi was close to colliding with teammate Luca Marini even before that. "At Luca, I was faster through the first corner, so I prepared an attack for the chicane. I almost made it but Luca braked very late and closed the door on me and then pulled onto the kerb. I expected him to drive wide at the exit, but I didn't expect him to almost fall.”

Marini saved himself from the fall, and Bezzecchi managed to avoid him, but Alex Marquez failed to do so. “When I got away from him, I didn't know what was happening behind me, but on the next lap I saw the yellow flags and I was sure they were put out because of Luca. I saw the video. The collision was ugly and I hope everything is ok with him."

Marini was transported to a medical center, where an examination showed no serious injuries.
