Former Formula 1 racer Gerhard Berger claims that Lewis Hamilton is the only racer in history who can be compared to the legendary Ayrton Senna in terms of talent. The Austrian, who was Senna’s team-mate between 1990 and 1992 when the Brazilian won two world titles, is convinced the Briton has everything it takes to surpass the record mark of seven world titles held by Michael Schumacher.

“They keep asking me how I think this or that racer compares to Ayrton,” says Berger, head of the German DTM touring car series. “In all these years, I’ve said I haven’t seen anyone close to Ayrton. Tora Lewis is the first racer to put him on the same level. The boy is extremely fast. He makes fewer mistakes than others. But he made the biggest impression on me with his attitude when, after all these successes and victories, he doesn’t think he has to win at any cost. He is willing to drive and wait, even if it means he will finish the race in second place. But he sees only points. He seems to be playing this game so well that he is invincible at the moment.

Many of the titles Mercedes has won over the past few years are due to their powertrain and Lewis. The engine was outstanding, but Lewis is at the top in the wet, on the fast tracks, on the street tracks and in the qualifiers.

He won five championship titles, winning race after race. Of course, he is in the best race car with the best engine, but he is also the best - by far the best at the moment.

If nothing happens to Lewis and he continues to race like this for the next two or three seasons, he will be a champion every time. He definitely has a chance. On the one hand, I would like Michael’s successes to remain intact, because of what happened to him. This is a great tragedy, very sad. But if I ignore that, Lewis is the most special racer of all time, which I follow Formula 1. ”

Nonetheless, Berger says there have been some fantastic racers racing in Formula 1 over the years, but Hamilton and Senna stand out as the best of all time. “Racers can only be judged on the basis of statistics. Who won the most races and the like. I look more at my own feeling. I think some great champions like Nelson Piquet, Niki Lauda, Alain Prost and Michael raced in F1. But there is always someone above all, Ayrton. But I see Lewis in the same league now.

I find it hard to say where I would place Jim Clark or Fangio. I last watched a documentary about him and realized how strong he was, ”added Berger.
