Ferrari admitted: Due to unreliability, we reduced the power of the engines

The Ferrari team admitted that they drove with limited engine power this season, after they had problems with the reliability of only those in the first races. The main problem with Ferrari's powertrain is that the turbocharger is smaller compared to its rivals, so it has to run at much higher revs to deliver the same power output. Such a design brings better acceleration, but at the same time causes more problems with reliability. The Achilles' heel of Ferrari's engines was most obviously exposed at the Mexican Grand Prix, where the turbochargers are much more stressed due to the thinner air at the higher altitude of the racetrack. At the expense of this, Ferrari lost a lot of performance, and at the same time a lot of tire wear took its toll, as a result of which the Italian team completely lost contact with Red Bull after the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Ferrari team boss Mattia Binotto said engine reliability will be a top priority during the winter break. "This is the main priority, because the car must be reliable if you want to win, which our car was not this year," he said. "The speed of the racing car is in second place, because although we were quite competitive in qualifying, we did not manage to transfer that to the races. Our form in the races was not good enough for a higher place in the championship. When developing a fast and reliable racing car, you can afford mistakes in tactics and pit stops, because you can cancel out mistakes with speed, so we have to point in that direction."

Binotto revealed that Maranello stopped development of the car much earlier than Red Bull and Mercedes and turned their attention to next season, which should give them some advantage next year.
