At the end of the winter testing in Bahrain, there were rumors that the recently retired four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel could replace the injured Lanca Stroll in the Aston Martin team.

Just a few days before the start of testing in Bahrain, news broke from the Aston Martin team that Lance Stroll had been injured while cycling, and that he would have to miss all three days of testing. It later became clear that the injuries were more serious and would likely rule the Canadian out of next weekend's opening F1 race, with speculation soon after that Vettel could take his place.

The rumors gained fresh momentum when team boss Mike Krack said that he had contacted the German and that this was also a possibility, but now the team has announced that Stroll will be replaced if necessary by a reserve driver, the current Formula 2 champion, Felipe Drugovich. The Brazilian has already replaced Stroll during testing in Bahrain, so he is the most suitable candidate for the reserve in the race.

"In the team, we will give Lanc every opportunity to recover and compete in the race," announced Aston Martin. "But if Lance can't compete, the AMR23 will be driven by Felipe."
