Fernando Alonso overtook Mercedes racer Lewis Hamilton and Nic Rosberg in the first free practice for the Canadian GP with a time of 1: 17.238.
The training was also threatened by rain towards the end, but the track remained dry, and the former teammate at McLarn shared 0.016 seconds, and Rosberg was just over a tenth behind.
Current world champion Sebastian Vettel set the fourth fastest time, followed by Valtteri Bottas and Daniel Ricciardo.
Seventh and eighth place went to McLarn racers Jenson Button and Kevin Magnussen, and ninth was Kimi Raikkonen, a second worse than teammate Alonso. Jean-Eric Vergne finished in the top ten.
