Ferrari racer Fernando Alonso has admitted he has to get lucky a few times if he wants to deprive Sebastian Vettl of this year’s laurels. The Spaniard couldn’t stop Red Bull’s ace at Ferrari’s home race at Monza.
In the end, he had to settle for second place, and in the overall standings he is 53 points behind the German, or seven more than before the race in Italy.
“We have to be realistic,” Alonso explained. “The difference in points is huge and we don't have enough races until the end of the season, nor the speed to be able to win several times in a row. We have to be lucky, but at the same time we need some of Sebastian’s resignations if we want to win this year’s title. With as many races as there are, and with such a gap in points, it will be very difficult. ”
The Ferrari racer added that he will not give up despite the increased backlog. “Last year the story was the same, he had to make up a big difference if he wanted to catch us. It was all up to us and we didn’t get our work done to the end. We resigned at Suzuki and had a few other problems. It is still a long way to go. We will fight until the last race and try to show our best performances, and win the most points. In Brazil, however, we will see how many points we will have compared to ourselves. ”
Alonso, who is expected to be joined by Kimi Raikkonen at Ferrari next season, said he was pleased with the continuation of the series of podium finishes in Monza after squeezing the maximum out of his car. "This weekend we squeezed the maximum out of the car, so I'm satisfied," explained the two-time world champion. "It was fantastic to stand on the winners' podium today."
Felipe Massa, Alonso’s teammate, complemented Ferrari’s success in the home race with fourth place. The Brazilian admitted that the race was "important" for his future in many ways, as the team is expected to decide on its racing lineup for next year in the coming days.
